International expansion

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Here’s some recent international news concerning two Danish companies, as reported by the Danish business tabloid Børsen.

The furniture designer and manufacturer Boconcept is expanding its concept into India, Brazil and Chile as well as continuing its expansion into North America.

The cleantech company Amplex, which manufactures “utility intelligence” systems, is highlighted as a company with outstanding international success. In just eight years, it has grown to 80 people, with offices in Dubai, Singapore, Shanghai and Washinton DC.

New York hearts Copenhagen

Monday, January 18th, 2010

New York has long been a popular destination for Danes. And now, it looks like the New York Times is trying to return the favor. A few weeks ago, on the heels of the COP15 climate summit, the Op-Ed columnist Thomas Friedman posted a story about Denmark’s many green initiatives and how the country is working hard to become a low-carbon economy. It positioned Denmark well - despite the summit’s inadequate results.

And that’s not all. Just last week, the same paper published a feature on “The 31 Places to Go in 2010″. And guess who came in at number five? Yep, Copenhagen. That’s right, Copenhagen is described as “one of the world’s greenest — and maybe coolest — cities”. Maybe it was all that Oprah-gushing?

Twittering for charity

Monday, January 18th, 2010

At a recent event hosted by the British Chamber of Commerce in Denmark (BCCD), I ran into a really inspiring person. His name is Ripley Davenport, and this spring he will set out on a 3-month mission to walk across Mongolia, a journey of over 2,700 kilometres - all by himself!

The goal is to raise awareness about human and environmental sustainability, to inspire and educate, as well as to encourage young people to follow their dreams and get active. He will also be raising funds for three charities: Shelter Box, Hope & Homes for Children, and Unicef.

During the Mongolia 2010 Expedition, Ripley will be producing a documentary film and use social media like Twitter, blogs and trackers to enable people around the world to follow him. I know I will be! It’s always fun to meet people like him who actually get out there and do something. It kind of puts cycling two kilometres to and from work to shame…

Check out the Mongolia 2010 Expedition website.

Maritime safety supplier continues international expansion

VIKING Life-Saving Equipment, a highly regarded supplier of maritime safety solutions, is another excellent example of a Danish company making waves on the international market. The company is expanding its international operations through the acquisition of a US fire suit manufacturer.

Designer gets revenge

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Not paying your bills can be dangerous – especially when the creditor in question has access to your company website. The results can be messy, as a restaurant in Tønsberg, Norway, found out recently.

Visitors to the restaurant’s website were greeted with this message:

“Welcome to the restaurant that hasn’t paid for its website.
Do you work at the restaurant? You should answer my email.”

(I’ve translated that myself from the Norwegian, apologies for any errors.)
